Academic institutions and research organizations strive to conduct research that contributes to finding solutions to emerging health problems affecting people's lives. This is achieved through discovering medications for diseases that afflict individuals in society, utilizing the researchers' expertise and advanced scientific qualifications, which enable them to grasp the problem and identify potential solutions. Therefore, these institutions provide the necessary environment for their researchers to succeed, ensuring that the materials they need are readily accessible. Additionally, they equip advanced laboratories to process these materials experimentally to achieve accurate and precise results. Given that Alnoor University possesses this commitment and vision, it has established its own herbarium instead of relying on other entities' nurseries. This herbarium was created on its premises along the Shalalat Road and is supplied with the seedlings required for the College of Pharmacy's endeavors to discover medications. This nursery is overseen by agricultural specialists and guided by researchers in pharmacology. Collaboration has also taken place with the Nineveh Agriculture Directorate, which assigned a specialized team to visit the site multiple times to provide guidance and instructions. The nursery at Alnoor University has also been visited by the Director of Nineveh Agriculture, Dr. Rabi' Youssef, who reviewed the nursery and instructed his team to deepen cooperation and provide the necessary facilities to support the faculty's research by supplying medicinal plants used in pharmaceutical industries.
This herbarium is one of two or three such facilities supporting the pharmaceutical industry within higher education and research institutions. It is anticipated that Alnoor University will develop and expand it to better serve the pharmaceutical sector by providing seedlings of all plants used in medication preparation through cultivation in the university’s herbarium. Additionally, there are plans to establish a nearby beehive to rear bees for honey production, which is integral to many medications that combine both medicinal plants and honey.
