The city and center of Nineveh Governorate, and it is considered the second largest city in Iraq in terms of population after Baghdad, with a population of about three million seven hundred and fifty thousand people. Mosul is about 400 km away from Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.
The city is famous for trade with nearby countries such as Syria and Turkey, and the residents of Mosul speak the Mosulian dialect or (Al-Maslawiya), which is somewhat similar to the northern Syrian dialects, and this Mosulian dialect has the greatest role in preserving the identity of the city). The majority of the residents of Mosul are Arab Muslims and descend from six main tribes, namely Shammar, Jubour, Al-Bu Hamdan, Al-Dulaim, Tai, the Sabawiyin or (Bani Sabaa) and the Hayalites. There are branches of the Bani Hilal that came from the regions of the Mardin Mountains and Tur Abdin in the Mahlami region in southeastern Turkey, and it has multiple sects of Christians who belong to several churches, Kurds, Turkmen and Shabak.
The modern Iraqi state would not have been formed at the beginning of the twenties of the twentieth century had it not been joined by Mosul, which has been a subject of intense attraction between Britain and France since World War I, and between the French Mandate authorities and Turkey.
As for Xenophon, who passed through Mosul in the middle of the fifth century BC, he called it “Musila.” Most historians agree that the naming of Mosul came from its arrival between two regions or two places, but they differed among themselves in the two places between which it reached. East, west, north and south. It is said that it was also named after the king who created it.
